Name: Kim Jonghyo
Tent Assignment: Tent #17 (Aquamarine)
Home Island Cottage Assignment: #267
Skill: Pain Suppression.
- Jonghyo doesn’t feel pain, it really is that simple, and for the most part he finds it to be a pretty neat ability. However, without pain he has no way of knowing when it’s time to step down. Someone might break his rib, and he’s still going to be running around as if nothing has happened. His body can’t actually take more of a beating than anyone else’s, but it works to his advantage that he doesn’t show himself weak until his body completely gives in. This means that he might walk around injured without even knowing.
Member Status: Jonghyo has been around long enough to not be considered a ‘new guy’, but he’s still getting used to the ropes. He has not yet become close friend with anyone at the circus, even if he is familiar with most of the faces and know the names of those performing.
Performance Details: Since his ability is rather useless in terms of providing entertainment for anyone but himself, Jonghyo enjoys walking between the booths and helping out, always happy to chat with the guests. He does small magic tricks for those willing to watch and relies heavily on his charisma as he makes coins disappear and the ace of hearts appear in the guests’ pockets.
Background: Despite having grown up in a loving family, the young Jonghyo still managed to end up with the ‘wrong’ kind of people. Perhaps it was his slight obsession with socializing, paired with his constant thrill-seeking, that got him there, as he ended up attending as many parties as possible and eventually becoming a part of the local youth gang. If he was ever questioned he would always insist that the people he befriended were good guys, really, even if their weekend fun wasn’t exactly innocent. Sure, they would shoplift, and occasionally they’d play around with some graffiti, but they weren’t actually dangerous.
But, of course, where there is one gang of adolescent half-criminals, there is going to be another. Towards the end of their friendship they were constantly getting into fights, both with rivalling gangs and with each other. They were nasty, and often didn’t end until someone had their nose broken. It’s very important to note that this was a time of realisation on Jonghyo’s part. In the middle of the chaos that was his social life, and between the strange looks people on the streets would give his black eyes, he came to the conclusion that he liked it. He liked fighting, he liked getting roughed up, and he absolutely adored the respect he would gain from his peers when he was able to take a beating. The reason he was so eager to take on anyone willing wasn’t exactly difficult to figure out, and he wasn’t the kind to lie to himself; he did it because it was easy. The other guys would hit him, and Jonghyo would, without effort, stand unaffected. Then he would hit them, and they would hiss in pain, something he was completely unfamiliar with.
Even before all that started he had a fairly good idea that something wasn’t completely right with him in terms of his, well, basic neurology. He had read about people who were constantly in pain, but never about someone who, like him, had never even experienced it. As a child he had quickly learned that scraping your knee was supposed to make you cry, as was breaking your arm when you fall off your bike. It wasn’t that he couldn’t feel anything, and at first he even thought that the weird tingling was what everyone felt when they pressed their palm against the heated stove, but his mother’s panic, and the doctor’s ramblings made him realise that that wasn’t the case.
In the end, he fell out with his group of friends and decided to move away from Busan. Originally, he had planned to find an ordinary job and turn his life around, but then one of his many contacts told him about this rumour surrounding a certain circus.
Personality: Jonghyo is, and always has been, quite the social butterfly. Always happy to converse with anyone willing to listen, he often finds himself chatting with friendly-looking strangers and making new acquaintances. He has gone through life surrounded by people, and is absolutely terrible at amusing himself.
Despite his history, he isn’t a violent guy. But it’s worth noting that even if he isn’t one to start a conflict, he won’t go out of his avoid one either. If someone tries to start something with him, or someone he has a sense of loyalty towards, he won’t hesitate to throw a punch. His ability has made him rather confident, on the verge of cocky, and he does enjoy to show off. He is usually pleasant company, though, but is often appreciated the most as a shallow friend.
Finally, since he’s used to gaining recognition through his actions, he doesn’t have the most well trained mind. He’s not stupid, or completely uneducated, but he has never really been ‘the guy with the plan’.
